Perdasdefogu is a small town, also called a comune, in the Sardinia region of Italy. Its name means "Stones of/for Fire" in the local language. You can find Perdasdefogu about 60 kilometers (37 miles) northeast of Cagliari and about 35 kilometers (22 miles) southwest of Tortolì.

This town is located in the Province of Nuoro. It shares borders with other towns like Escalaplano, Jerzu, Ulassai, and Tertenia. An interesting fact about Perdasdefogu is that it's close to the Salto di Quirra rocket launch site.

History of Perdasdefogu

The area where Perdasdefogu is located has been home to people for a very long time. Even before the well-known Nuragic civilization in Sardinia, people lived here. We know this because archaeologists have found ancient structures called nuraghes and other old items in the area. Nuraghes are special stone towers built by the Nuragic people thousands of years ago.

Medieval Times and Feudalism

During the Middle Ages, Perdasdefogu was part of a kingdom called the Judicate of Cagliari. It belonged to a smaller area known as the curatoria of Sarrabus. When the Judicate of Cagliari fell in 1258, the town came under the control of Pisa, a powerful city in Italy.

Later, in 1323, the Kingdom of Aragon took over. In 1363, King Pietro IV of Aragon made Perdasdefogu part of the county of Quirra. This land was given to a nobleman named Berengario Carroz as a feud. This means he was given the land to control, often in exchange for loyalty or military service.

Changes in Control

In 1603, the county of Quirra became a marquisate. This was a higher noble title. The land was first controlled by the Centelles family, and then by the Osorio de la Cueva family. This system of feudalism, where land was owned by nobles, ended in 1839. At that time, the town was bought back from the noble family, and the feudal system was stopped.

Longevity in Perdasdefogu

Perdasdefogu is famous for something very special: many of its residents live to be very old! It's one of a few towns in the Ogliastra area, including Arzana and Villagrande Strisaili, that have a high number of people over 90 years old.

The Longest-Lived Family

The town is even home to what was once considered the longest-lived family in the world! In 2014, the head of this family, Consola Melis, was 107 years old. She had eight brothers and sisters who were all over 80 or 90 years old. Together, their ages added up to an amazing 828 years! Her sister Claudia also turned 101 in 2014. This shows that Perdasdefogu is a place where people enjoy long and healthy lives.
