Person Colby Cheney (born February 25, 1828 – died June 19, 1901) was an important person from New Hampshire. He was a paper manufacturer, meaning he made paper for a living. He was also an abolitionist, which means he worked to end slavery. As a Republican politician, he served as the 35th Governor of New Hampshire. Later, he represented New Hampshire in the United States Senate.

Early Life and Career

Person Colby Cheney was born in Holderness, which is now known as Ashland. His parents, Abigail and Moses Cheney, were both abolitionists. His older brother, Oren Burbank Cheney, later founded Bates College.

Cheney went to schools in Peterborough and Hancock. He also studied at the Parsonsfield Seminary in Maine. For many years, he worked in the paper manufacturing business in Peterborough. In 1854, he became a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives.

Civil War Service

During the Civil War, Cheney served in the military. He was a first lieutenant and quartermaster in the Thirteenth Regiment of the New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. This was from 1862 to 1863. After the war, he worked as a state railroad commissioner from 1864 to 1867. In 1867, he moved to Manchester. There, he continued his work in the paper business.

Person Colby Cheney also had a career in politics. In 1871, he was elected mayor of Manchester. He then became the Governor of New Hampshire, serving from 1875 to 1877.

Serving in the Senate

Later, Cheney was appointed to the United States Senate. He filled a vacant seat after the death of Austin F. Pike. He served as a Senator from November 1886 to June 1887. After his time in the Senate, he went back to his paper manufacturing business.

Diplomatic Role

From 1892 to 1893, Cheney served as an Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Switzerland. This means he was a special representative for the United States in Switzerland. Person Colby Cheney passed away in Dover in 1901. He is buried in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Manchester.
