Life and Artworks
Peter Brown worked closely with famous English naturalists like Thomas Pennant and Joseph Banks. Even though he was mainly an artist, he also wrote scientific descriptions for some species. One example is the colorful North American moth called Haploa clymene. Brown's amazing drawings included many different subjects. He drew birds, various plants, and many kinds of insects.

In 1776, Peter Brown published his own book. It was called New Illustrations of Zoology. This book contained fifty colored plates of new and interesting animals. It featured birds, a few four-legged animals (quadrupeds), reptiles, and insects. Each drawing came with a short scientific description. The book was published in London and also in French.
Arctic Zoology
Brown also helped with Thomas Pennant's book, Arctic Zoology. This work was published between 1784 and 1785.
Achievements and Recognition
Peter Brown showed his artwork in several art shows. He exhibited at the Free Society of Artists and the Royal Academy from 1770 to 1791.
Royal Appointment
In 1783, he received a special honor. He was named the Botanical Painter to the Prince of Wales. This meant he was the official artist for plants for the future king.
Teaching and Skill
Brown also created plant drawings for the private collections of Elizabeth Montagu. She was the wife of George Montagu, 4th Duke of Manchester. This suggests that he might have been her drawing teacher. Experts say his drawings showed a very high level of skill and talent.
