Peter Dvorský (born September 25, 1951) is a famous Slovak opera singer. He is a tenor, which means he sings the highest male voice parts. Peter Dvorský has a beautiful, clear voice. He is known for singing roles from Italian and Slavic operas.

His Early Life

Peter Dvorský was born in a place called Horná Ves. At that time, it was part of Czechoslovakia. Today, it is in Slovakia.

He comes from a very musical family. Peter has four brothers. Three of them are also successful opera singers. Their names are Jaroslav Dvorský, Miroslav Dvorský, and Pavol Dvorský. His other brother, Vendelín, is an economist.

Peter's talent for music was clear from a young age. He first learned to play the piano. Later, he decided to focus on opera singing.

Starting His Opera Journey

Peter Dvorský studied music at the Bratislava State Conservatory. His teacher was Ida Černecká. After finishing his studies, he started his professional opera career. This was in 1972.

His first performance was at the Slovak National Theatre. He sang the role of Lensky in Tchaikovsky's opera, Eugene Onegin.

He quickly started winning awards. In 1973, he won a national singing contest. The next year, in 1974, he won first prize. This was at the international Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. As part of his prize, he got to study at La Scala's special school in Italy.

In 1975, he won another top prize. This was at the singing contest in the Geneva International Music Competition. He then spent a year learning from famous teachers. This was at La Scala in Milan from 1976 to 1977.

Becoming a World Star

After his training, Peter Dvorský became famous very quickly. He performed at the Vienna State Opera in 1976. He was very popular there.

In 1977, he made his debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera. Then, in 1979, he sang at La Scala in Milan. His first performance at the Covent Garden was in 1978. He sang the role of the Duke in Verdi's opera, Rigoletto.

A very famous tenor, Luciano Pavarotti, thought highly of Peter Dvorský. Pavarotti even called him "my legitimate successor." This means Pavarotti believed Peter would be the next great tenor. During these years, Peter became one of the world's leading tenors. He received many awards for his amazing talent.

His Later Career

In 1996, Peter Dvorský left his job at the Slovak National Theater (SND). He had worked there for 24 years. He resigned because he disagreed with some changes happening in the theater. He felt he could not continue working under the new cultural policies.

Since 2006, Dvorský has been in charge of opera houses. First, he led the opera house in Košice. Later, he became the head of the opera house at the Slovak National Theater (SND) in Bratislava.
