Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Peter Dvorský was born in a town called Partizánske. At that time, it was part of Czechoslovakia, which is now Slovakia. He grew up with four brothers. Three of his brothers, Jaroslav Dvorský, Miroslav Dvorský, and Pavol Dvorský, also became successful opera singers. His other brother, Vendelín Dvorský, works as an economist.

From a young age, it was clear that Peter Dvorský had a special talent for music. He first learned to play the piano. Later, he decided to focus on singing opera.

Peter Dvorský's Opera Career

Peter Dvorský studied music at the Bratislava State Conservatory. His teacher was Ida Černecká. After he finished his studies, he started his professional opera career in 1972. His first performance was at the Slovak National Theatre. He played the role of Lensky in an opera called Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky.

Just one year later, in 1973, he won a national singing competition. This competition was named after Mikuláš Schneider-Trnavský. In 1974, he won first prize at the international Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. As part of his prize, he was invited to study at La Scala's special school for singers. La Scala is a very famous opera house in Milan, Italy.

In 1975, he won another important singing contest. This was at the Geneva International Music Competition. He then spent a year learning from famous singers Renata Carosia and Giuseppe Lugga at La Scala in Milan. This was from 1976 to 1977.

After these successes, Peter Dvorský quickly became famous around the world. He performed at the Vienna State Opera in 1976. He was very popular there. In 1977, he made his debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera. Then, in 1979, he sang at La Scala in Milan. His first performance at the Covent Garden in London was in 1978. He sang the role of the Duke in Verdi's opera Rigoletto.

The famous tenor Luciano Pavarotti greatly admired Peter Dvorský. Pavarotti even called him "my legitimate successor" several times. This meant Pavarotti believed Dvorský would follow in his footsteps as a great tenor. During these years, Peter Dvorský became one of the top tenors worldwide. He received many awards and honors. On October 16, 1996, Peter Dvorský left his job at the Slovak National Theatre (SND). He had worked there for 24 years. He resigned because he disagreed with some changes happening at the theater. He said he could not agree with the new cultural policies.

Since 2006, Peter Dvorský has led opera houses. He was the head of the opera house in Košice. Later, he became the head of the opera house at the Slovak National Theater (SND) in Bratislava.
