Peter McManus (born March 1829 – died April 27, 1859) was a brave soldier from Tynan, County Armagh, in Ireland. He received the Victoria Cross, which is the highest award for bravery given to soldiers in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries. It's given for amazing courage when facing the enemy.

Peter McManus's Bravery
Peter McManus was about 28 years old when he showed incredible courage. He was a private in the 1st Battalion of the 5th Regiment of Foot, part of the British Army. This happened during a big conflict known as the Indian Mutiny.
The Event in Lucknow
On September 26, 1857, Peter McManus was in Lucknow, India. A group of soldiers, including McManus, were trapped inside a house. They were surrounded by rebel soldiers called sepoys.
McManus's Actions
Private McManus stayed outside the house, even though it was very dangerous. He used a pillar for cover and kept firing at the sepoys. His actions stopped the rebels from rushing into the house. He was even wounded during this time.
Saving Captain Arnold
Peter McManus didn't stop there. He teamed up with another private, John Ryan. Together, they bravely ran into the street. They rescued Captain Arnold of the 1st Madras Fusiliers. Captain Arnold was in a type of stretcher called a dooly. They brought him safely into the house, even while under heavy enemy fire. Captain Arnold was wounded again during this rescue.
Later Life and Legacy
After these brave actions, Peter McManus was awarded the Victoria Cross. He later became a sergeant. Sadly, he died from smallpox in Allahabad, British India, on April 27, 1859. He was only 30 years old. His bravery is still remembered today.
