The Story of Peters Ice Cream
How It All Began
Fred Peters started his ice cream business in 1907. He called it the Peters' American Delicacy Company. It was located in Paddington, New South Wales. His business quickly grew very popular.
By 1923, the company needed a bigger place to make ice cream. So, a new factory was built in Redfern.
Growing Across Australia
Peters Ice Cream kept expanding. In 1927, Fred Peters opened another company called Peters' Arctic Delicacy Co. Ltd in Brisbane. This new company also had a branch in Newcastle.
Just two years later, in 1929, Peters grew even more. New companies were set up in Victoria, Western Australia, and Townsville. A new factory was also built in Rockhampton.
Cool Ideas for Shops
Fred Peters helped shops sell more ice cream. He was one of the first to bring small fridges to Australia. He would rent these fridges to stores. This made it easier for shops to keep ice cream cold and fresh.
The Peters brand used different colors for its look. In New South Wales and Queensland, the colors were red and cream. But in Victoria and Western Australia, they used green and cream.
Changes in Ownership
For many years, most Peters ice cream was made by a company called Petersville Australia Limited in Melbourne. However, Peters Western Australia had its own separate factory.
In the late 1980s, the Peters businesses (except for Western Australia) were bought by the Adelaide Steamship Company. Later, they were sold to Pacific Dunlop.
In the mid-1990s, Pacific Dunlop sold its ice cream part to Nestlé. This meant Nestlé owned the Peters brand in many parts of Australia.
The separate Peters Western Australia business was owned by Peters and Brownes Foods. In 2006, a company called Fonterra bought Peters and Brownes Foods. Then, in 2009, Fonterra sold it to Nestlé. This gave Nestlé control of the Peters brand all across Australia.
In 2012, the Peters company was bought from Nestlé by Pacific Equity Partners. However, Nestlé still kept the rights to make some popular ice cream types, like Drumstick.
In May 2014, Pacific Equity Partners sold Peters to a European company called R&R Ice Cream.
Finally, on April 19, 2018, R&R Ice Cream joined with Nestlé's ice cream business. They formed a new company called Froneri. Froneri then became the main owner of Peters Ice Cream.
