Peters Ice Cream is a famous Australian brand that makes delicious ice cream! It's now part of a big European food company called Froneri. The company was started in 1907 by an American named Frederick (Fred) Peters. He used his mother's special recipe to create the first Peters ice cream.

The Story of Peters Ice Cream

How it Started

The Peters Ice Cream company began in 1907 in a place called Paddington, New South Wales in Australia. It was first known as the Peters' American Delicacy Company. Fred Peters wanted to make ice cream that was "The Health food of a Nation."

In 1923, a new factory opened in Redfern. The business grew quickly! By 1927, Fred started more companies in places like Brisbane and Newcastle. Soon after, in 1929, Peters Ice Cream expanded to Victoria, Western Australia, and other towns like Townsville and Rockhampton.

Fred Peters also helped bring small fridges to shops across Australia. This made it easier for stores to sell ice cream! The company used red and cream colors in New South Wales and Queensland. In Victoria and Western Australia, they used green and cream. The main factory in Australia is still in Mulgrave, near Melbourne. Most of their ice cream is made there today.

Changing Owners

Over the years, Peters Ice Cream has been owned by different companies. In the late 1980s, a company called Adelaide Steamship Company took over. Then, Pacific Dunlop (now called Ansell) bought it.

In the mid-1990s, Pacific Dunlop sold its food businesses. The ice cream part was bought by Nestlé, a very well-known food company. Nestlé continued to sell popular Peters ice cream brands like Choc-Wedge, Drumstick, and Monaco Bar.

For a while, Peters Ice Cream in Western Australia was a separate business. It was part of a company called Peters and Brownes (PB) Foods. This part of the business was sold to Fonterra in 2006, and then to Nestlé in 2009. This meant Nestlé now owned the Peters brand all across Australia. Before this, Peters in Western Australia even sent ice cream to Japan (where it was called Lady Borden) and New Zealand (where it was called Tip Top).

In 2012, a company called Pacific Equity Partners (PEP) bought the Peters Ice Cream business, including the Mulgrave factory. They also got permission to keep making some of Nestlé's popular ice cream brands, like Drumstick. Then, in May 2014, a European company called R&R Ice Cream bought Peters.

Finally, in 2018, R&R Ice Cream and Nestlé joined forces to create a new company called Froneri. This is why Peters Ice Cream is now part of Froneri!
