Petersburg is a small city in Monroe County, Michigan. In 2020, about 1,171 people lived there. It is one of the smallest cities in Michigan based on its land area.

History of Petersburg
Early Settlement and Naming
The area where Petersburg now stands was first settled around 1824 by a man named Richard Peters. He became the first postmaster in 1831.
Later, in 1836, Thomas Cole and Austin Wing officially started the community. They bought land from Richard Peters. The post office was first called "Summerfield."
Becoming a Village and City
In 1863, the post office name changed to "Petersburgh." The community became an official village in 1869.
The post office name was shortened to "Petersburg" in 1893. Many years later, in 1967, Petersburg changed from a village to a city.
Geography of Petersburg
Petersburg is located in the western part of Monroe County. It is about 17 miles (27 km) west of Monroe, which is the county seat.
The city covers a total area of about 0.49 square miles (1.27 square kilometers). A very small part of this area is water. The River Raisin, a river that flows into Lake Erie, touches the northwest edge of the city.
