Pezuela is a small community, also called a barrio, located in the town of Lares, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 474 people lived there. This barrio is divided into roughly 8 smaller areas called sectors. Since Hurricane Maria hit in 2017, Pezuela has faced challenges with landslides.
A Look Back in Time
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a special area of the U.S. In 1899, the United States Department of War counted the people living in Puerto Rico. They found that 1,010 people lived in Pezuela barrio at that time.

Landslides and Safety
In late 2019, Pezuela experienced 12 landslides in just one month. These landslides happened because of heavy rainfall. Some homes near PR-131 were in danger of collapsing. Residents said that the problem was due to waterways not being fixed or cleared after Hurricane Maria in 2017. People worry that a large landslide could happen, similar to the Mameyes Landslide in Ponce in 1985.
Understanding Sectors
Barrios, like Pezuela, are often divided into even smaller local areas. These smaller areas are called sectores (which means sectors in English). Different types of sectores exist, such as urbanización or reparto.
