Philip Francis Anthony Maloney (born October 6, 1927 – died February 21, 2020) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player and coach. He played in the NHL with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Chicago Black Hawks. This was between 1949 and 1960.
Most of his playing career, from 1946 to 1970, was spent in other leagues. He played mainly with the Vancouver Canucks in the Western Hockey League. After he stopped playing, he became a coach. He coached the Vancouver Canucks of the NHL from 1974 to 1977. He also worked as the general manager for the Canucks from 1974 to 1976.

Phil Maloney's Hockey Playing Journey
Phil Maloney started his hockey career with the Shawinigan Cataractes. In 1948, he signed a contract with the Boston Bruins. He was sent to the AHL to play for the Hershey Bears. In his first year as a professional, he scored 79 points.
Playing in the NHL
The next year, Maloney joined the Boston Bruins in the NHL. He scored 46 points (15 goals, 31 assists) in 70 games. Because of his great first year, he finished second for the Calder Memorial Trophy. This award is given to the best rookie (new player) in the NHL.
After playing 13 games with the Bruins the next season, he was traded. He then played 29 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1952-53 season. Later, he also played 45 games for the Chicago Black Hawks between 1958 and 1960.
Time with the Vancouver Canucks (WHL)
Maloney spent 14 years playing for the Vancouver Canucks in the WHL. He became the team's all-time leading scorer with 923 points. He retired at the end of the 1969-70 season. This was just one year before the Canucks joined the NHL.
He had a fantastic season in 1960-61 while playing for the Buffalo Bisons. He scored a career-high 102 points that year.
Phil Maloney's Coaching Career
After his long playing career, Phil Maloney became an assistant coach for the NHL's Vancouver Canucks. He took over as the head coach late in the 1973-74 season. He coached 37 games that year.
In the 1974-75 season, he led the Canucks to a great achievement. The team finished first in their division, called the Smythe Division. This was also the first time in the team's history that they made it to the playoffs.
Phil Maloney passed away on February 21, 2020, when he was 92 years old.
