Philip Byron McKinnely (born July 8, 1954) is a former American football player and official. He played as an offensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) for seven seasons, mostly with the Atlanta Falcons. After his playing career, he became an official for football games, working in college and professional leagues, including the NFL.
Phil McKinnely's Football Journey
Playing Days
Phil McKinnely started his professional football career after being drafted in 1976. He played as an offensive tackle, a position on the offensive line that helps protect the quarterback and block for running plays. He spent most of his NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons from 1976 to 1980. He also played briefly for the Los Angeles Rams and the Chicago Bears. After his time in the NFL, he continued to play in the United States Football League (USFL) for teams like the Memphis Showboats and Birmingham Stallions.
Becoming an Official
After retiring as a player, Phil McKinnely decided to stay involved in football by becoming an official. Officials are the people who make sure the rules of the game are followed. He started by officiating in college football for the Southeastern Conference. He also worked in NFL Europa, which was a professional football league in Europe. In 2002, McKinnely joined the NFL as a head linesman. He wore uniform number 110. He continued to be an NFL official until he retired after the 2019 NFL season.
