The village is part of the larger town of Philadelphia. It is located northeast of Watertown and just northwest of Fort Drum.

History of Philadelphia
The area where Philadelphia village now stands was once known by other names. It was called "Friends Settlement" and "Benezet." The first people to settle here were a group called Quakers.
Philadelphia officially became a village in 1872. This means it got its own local government.

Geography of Philadelphia
The village of Philadelphia covers an area of about 2.3 square kilometers (or 0.96 square miles). All of this area is land.
Philadelphia is located right on U.S. Route 11. This is a major road that connects to New York State Route 26. US-11 goes southwest about 17 miles to Watertown, which is the main city in Jefferson County. It also goes northeast about 18 miles to Gouverneur. NY-26 travels northwest about 18 miles to Alexandria Bay, which is on the St. Lawrence River.
The Indian River flows right through the middle of the village, adding to its natural beauty.
