Philadelphia is a town in Jefferson County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,964 people lived there.
The town of Philadelphia also contains a smaller area called a village, which is also named Philadelphia. Both are located in the northeastern part of Jefferson County.

History of Philadelphia
People first started settling in the Philadelphia area around 1804. A special mill for grinding grain, called a grist mill, was built in 1804. It was located on the Indian River, right next to a large waterfall in the village.
The town of Philadelphia was officially created in 1821. It was formed from a part of the nearby town of Le Ray. Later, in 1872, the community of Philadelphia became its own separate village.
In 1959, the Indian River Central High School opened. This school serves students from Philadelphia and several other nearby towns.
An important historical site, the Sterlingville Archeological District, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. This means it's a special place protected for its history.
Geography of Philadelphia
The town of Philadelphia covers a total area of about 37.4 square miles (97.4 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a very small part, about 0.02 square miles (0.05 square kilometers), is water. This means less than 1% of the town is covered by water.
Transportation in Philadelphia
U.S. Route 11 is a major highway that runs through the middle of the town. It goes from the northeast to the southwest. Another important road, New York Route 26, goes north from Philadelphia towards Alexandria Bay. It also goes south to Vestal.
In the past, Philadelphia was a busy spot for trains. Several train lines of the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad met here. These lines connected Philadelphia to many other cities like Clayton, Ogdensburg, Massena Springs, Niagara Falls, Syracuse, Rome, and Utica.
The last time passenger trains ran through Philadelphia was in 1964. This was on the New York Central Railroad, which took over the older lines. Today, a company called CSX Transportation still uses the train tracks in Philadelphia to move goods and freight.

Philadelphia is known for its cold winters! It holds the record for the coldest December temperature ever recorded in New York state. It once dropped to an amazing -47 degrees Fahrenheit (-44 degrees Celsius).

- Winters (December to February) are very cold with lots of snow. The average low temperature is around 6 to 7 degrees Fahrenheit (-14 to -13 degrees Celsius).

- The town gets a lot of snow, especially in December and January.

Famous Person from Philadelphia
- Cassius Marcellus Coolidge (1844-1934) was born in Philadelphia. He lived here or in nearby Antwerp for most of his life. He is famous for his funny paintings of Dogs Playing Poker.
Philadelphia Cream Cheese Fact
When cream cheese first became popular in the United States around 1870, many farmers in New York made it in small amounts. Because of this, some people thought that Philadelphia brand cream cheese was named after Philadelphia, New York.
However, this is not true! Philadelphia Cream Cheese was actually named after the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At that time, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was known for making very high-quality dairy products.
Places in Philadelphia Town
The town of Philadelphia includes several smaller communities and locations:
- Fort Drum – This is a large military base that takes up the southeastern part of Philadelphia town.
- Philadelphia (originally called "Quaker Settlement") – This is a village located near the center of the town, right on US-11.
- Pine Plains – You can find this area in the southern part of the town, close to Sterlingville.
- Rogers – This spot is in the very southern corner of the town, south of Strickland Corners on County Road 30.
- Shurtleff Corners – This location is on the northwestern border of the town. It's northwest of Philadelphia village on NY-26.
- Sterlingville – This used to be a small village (a hamlet) in the southern corner of the town.
- Strickland Corners – This area is in the southern corner of the town on County Road 30, northwest of Sterlingville.
- Whitney Corners – This location is on County Road 20, west of Philadelphia village.
