History of Phillips
How Phillips Got Its Name
The town of Phillips got its name from Henry L. Phillips. He was a person who worked with coal mines in the area.
Early Days: Post Office and Indian Territory
A post office opened in Phillips on April 2, 1892. At that time, this area was known as Indian Territory. This was before Oklahoma became a state. The post office stayed open for many years but closed on April 2, 1927.
When Phillips was first founded, it was part of Atoka County. This county was part of the Choctaw Nation, a large area belonging to the Choctaw people.
