Philodendron is a large group of plants from the Arum family. The name Philodendron means "tree lover," which makes sense because many of these plants like to climb trees. There are about 900 different kinds, or species, of Philodendrons known today. These plants are evergreen, meaning they keep their leaves all year round. Some Philodendrons grow as vines, climbing up other plants or structures. Others can grow as epiphytes, which are plants that grow on other plants but don't take nutrients from them. Most Philodendrons grow like bushes and can reach a height of about 6 meters (nearly 20 feet).
What Are Philodendrons?
Philodendrons are a very diverse group of plants. They come in many shapes and sizes. Some have huge, heart-shaped leaves, while others have deeply cut or lobed leaves. These plants are native to tropical areas, mostly in Central and South America, as well as the West Indies. They thrive in warm, humid environments, often growing in rainforests.
Popular Houseplants
Many people love to grow Philodendrons inside their homes. They are very popular houseplants because they grow quickly and are easy to take care of. They don't need a lot of special attention, which makes them great for beginners. Sometimes, another similar plant called Monstera is mistakenly called a Philodendron because they look alike.
Cleaning the Air
Did you know that Philodendrons can help clean the air in your home? These amazing plants can help remove some common poisons that might be found indoors. They are especially good at getting rid of chemicals like formaldehyde, carbon monoxide, and benzene. This makes them not just beautiful, but also helpful for a healthier home environment.
