Where is Picfair Village?
Picfair Village is surrounded by some well-known streets. To the north, you'll find Pico Boulevard. Hauser Boulevard is on the east side. Venice Boulevard marks the southern edge, and Fairfax Avenue is to the west.
Other neighborhoods nearby include Wilshire Vista and the Miracle Mile to the north. Little Ethiopia is to the northwest, and Faircrest Heights is to the west.
The Story of Picfair Village
Picfair Village got its name from an old movie theater. The Picfair Theater used to stand at the corner of Pico and Fairfax. It was a popular spot that opened in 1941. Sadly, the theater was damaged in 1992 and later taken down.
Early Days of the Neighborhood
Back in 1922, this area was part of a new development. It was called Pico Boulevard Heights. People thought it would be a wonderful place to live. They could buy plots of land for building homes.
Art and Famous Residents
You can see a cool street mural on Pico Boulevard. It was painted by a Los Angeles artist named Retna. The mural shows a portrait of a Chicana woman. It has unique script-like symbols in the background.
The neighborhood was once home to a famous crime fiction writer, Walter Mosley. One of his book characters even lived on Stanley Street!
A Recognized Community
Since 1998, the people in Picfair Village have been very active. They have a group called the Picfair Village Neighborhood Association. This group helps make the community a better place.
In 2004, Los Angeles magazine called Picfair Village one of the "10 Most Overlooked Neighborhoods." A few years later, in 2007, the Los Angeles Times said it was becoming a "trendy place to live and play." Picfair Village is also part of the P.I.C.O. Neighborhood Council.
What Are the Homes Like?
Most of the homes in Picfair Village are one or two-family houses. Many are built in the Spanish Colonial or Art Deco styles. These styles are known for their unique designs.
Some buildings have multiple units, especially north of Saturn Street. These often have a Mid-Century architecture look.
Shopping and Dining
The main street of the "Village" is Pico Boulevard. This part of the street runs between Fairfax and Hauser. It's a lively area filled with cafes, restaurants, and small shops.
The area south of Pico and north of Saturn Street has a mix of houses. You can also find buildings with two or four living spaces. South of Pickford, most homes are single-family houses.
