Piedra is a small community in Fresno County, California. It is not an official city or town. The name "Piedra" comes from the Spanish word for "stone." This community is located on the south side of the Kings River. It is about 23 miles (37 km) east of the city of Fresno. Piedra sits at an elevation of 538 feet (164 meters) above sea level.
A Look Back: Piedra's History
Piedra got its start because of rocks! In 1911, a railroad company called the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad built a special train line. This line went to a nearby place where they dug up rocks, called a quarry. The railroad gave this new stop the name "Piedra." This is because "piedra" means "rock" or "stone" in Spanish.
Over time, the community's name changed a bit. People sometimes called it "Del Piedra" or "Delpiedra." Eventually, everyone agreed to just call it Piedra.
Piedra has also had its own post office. A post office named Delpiedra operated from 1920 to 1943. Later, the Piedra post office opened in 1949.
