The Pierrefonds River is a cool river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Panache River, which eventually leads to James Bay. This river goes through a few different areas called townships: Picquet, Prévert, and Carpiquet.

The main activity around the river is forestry, which means cutting down trees for wood. People also enjoy recreational tourism here, like visiting for fun. A forest road, R1051, helps people get around the Pierrefonds River valley.

The river usually freezes over from early November until mid-May. However, it's safest to walk or travel on the ice from mid-November to mid-April.

River's Journey: Where it Flows

The Pierrefonds River starts in an unnamed lake in Eeyou Istchee James Bay (municipality). This lake is about 0.5 kilometers long and sits at an elevation of 411 meters. It's located near a tall mountain, about 2.3 kilometers northeast of its peak.

From its starting lake, the Pierrefonds River flows for about 35.4 kilometers. It travels mostly southwest, winding through different areas. Along its path, it crosses three small lakes.

Connecting to Bigger Waters

The Pierrefonds River joins the Panache River. The Panache River then flows into the Wetetnagami River. The Wetetnagami River travels north through Wetetnagami Lake before emptying into Nicobi Lake.

Nicobi Lake is the source of the Nicobi River, which flows north into the Opawica River. The Opawica River meets the Chibougamau River, and together they form the Waswanipi River. This river flows west through several large lakes, including Lake Waswanipi, Goéland Lake, and Olga Lake. Finally, it reaches Lake Matagami, which then flows into the Nottaway River, a major river that empties into Rupert Bay in James Bay. So, the water from the Pierrefonds River eventually makes its way to James Bay!

Naming the River

For a long time, the land around the Pierrefonds River was home to different Indigenous peoples, including the Atikamekw, the Algonquin people, and the Cree.

The name "Pierrefonds River" became official on December 5, 1968. This was decided by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the organization responsible for naming places in Quebec.
