History of Pine Grove
Pine Grove became an official town in 1832. But people from Europe, especially German families, had settled in the area much earlier. Records show there was a Lutheran church here as early as 1782.
Historic Buildings and Sites
A special old building called Nutting Hall was built between 1823 and 1825. Both Nutting Hall and the area around it, known as the Pine Grove Historic District, are important places listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are protected because of their history.
The Pine Grove Theatre, which is also part of the historic district, opened in 1910. It had 335 seats and was a popular spot for movies and shows for many years.
Geography and Nature
Swatara Creek, a stream that flows into the Susquehanna River, runs right through Pine Grove. This creek has played an important role in the town's history.
The Union Canal Branch
From 1830 to 1862, a special branch of the Union Canal connected Swatara Creek at Pine Grove to another place called Union Water Works. This canal branch was about 22 miles long. It was used to transport anthracite coal and supply water. Sadly, the canal branch was destroyed in 1862 when the Swatara Creek flooded.
Today, parts of Swatara State Park are located along the Swatara Creek within Pine Grove. This park offers beautiful natural areas to explore.
