Pine Mountain is a long, narrow mountain range called a ridge. It is part of the larger Appalachian Mountains. This ridge stretches across three states: Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee.

Pine Mountain is about 125 miles long. It starts near Pioneer, Tennessee, and goes all the way to a spot near Elkhorn City, Kentucky. The highest point on Pine Mountain is called Birch Knob. It stands 3,273 feet above sea level. Birch Knob is located right on the border between Kentucky and Virginia.

For a long time, Pine Mountain made it hard for people to travel. Only two waterways cut through the entire ridge. One is the Cumberland River at Pineville, Kentucky. The other is the Clear Fork (Cumberland River tributary) near Jellico, Tennessee.
