Pitcher Mountain is a cool mountain in southwest New Hampshire. It stands tall at 2,153 feet (656 meters). This mountain is a type of landform called a monadnock. A monadnock is a single mountain that stands out from the flat land around it. Imagine a lone island in a sea of land!
From the top of Pitcher Mountain, you can see all around, a full 360-degree view. It's a great spot for hikers.

Pitcher Mountain is located in the town of Stoddard, New Hampshire. It's a popular spot for people who love to hike and explore nature. The mountain is part of a larger area known for its open fields and blueberry bushes.
Hiking and Exploring
A famous hiking path called the Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway goes right over Pitcher Mountain. This trail is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) long. It connects two other well-known mountains, Mount Monadnock and Mount Sunapee. Hiking to the top of Pitcher Mountain is a fun adventure. You get to see amazing views from the open summit.
There is also a fire tower on the very top of the mountain. Fire towers are used to spot wildfires from a distance. On the eastern side of the mountain, you might even see a farm where beef cattle are raised.
Plants and Wildlife
The lower parts of Pitcher Mountain are covered in thick forests. These are mostly "northern hardwood forests." This means you'll find trees like maple, birch, and beech. As you go higher up the mountain, you'll see smaller groups of red spruce trees. These are evergreen trees that like cooler, higher places.
Pitcher Mountain is also part of a big area with "heath barrens." These are open, rocky areas where small shrubs like blueberries and other heath plants grow. It's a great place to find wild blueberries when they are in season!
Water's Journey
Water from Pitcher Mountain flows in different directions.
- Water from the east and north sides flows into Beards Brook.
- From there, it goes into the Contoocook River.
- Then it joins the Merrimack River.
- Finally, this water reaches the Atlantic Ocean.
Water from the west and south sides of the mountain takes a different path.
- It flows into Robinson Brook.
- Then it goes into Otter Brook.
- Next, it reaches a stream called "The Branch".
- After that, it flows into the Ashuelot River.
- Finally, this water travels to the Connecticut River and then into Long Island Sound.
