The Pitjantjatjara language is very similar to other Western Desert languages. This means that people who speak Pitjantjatjara can often understand speakers of other related languages, like Yankunytjatjara. This is called being mutually intelligible. The name of the Pitjantjatjara people comes from their word for "coming" or "going," which is pitjantja.
Where is Pitjantjatjara Spoken?
The Pitjantjatjara language is spoken in several parts of Australia. Most speakers live in the northwest of South Australia. They also live on special lands called Pitjantjatjara freehold lands and near a place called Yalata.
You can also find Pitjantjatjara speakers in the southwest corner of the Northern Territory. Some speakers also live in Western Australia. In 2016, about 3,125 people spoke Pitjantjatjara. Many of them speak only Pitjantjatjara, meaning they are monolingual.
