History of Plamondon

The community of Plamondon was started in 1908 by Joseph Plamondon. Many of the first families who settled here were French-American and French Canadian pioneers. Most of these families came from Provemont, Michigan. This town is now known as Lake Leelanau. Other settlers came from French-speaking areas in Ontario, Canada. This information was shared in an interview with Cecelia Bussey in 1991.

North of Plamondon, there is a community called Rossian. This area is home to a group of people known as Old Believers. They are a traditional branch of the Russian Orthodox church. Their ancestors separated from the main church after some changes were made by Patriarch Nikon in 1666. This split is known as the Raskol.

The Old Believers near Plamondon are called bezpopovtsy, which means "Priestless Old Believers." They believe that the line of church leaders ended after Nikon's changes. Because of this, they do not have priests or certain church ceremonies. Many of these families moved to the area in the mid-1970s. They came from Woodburn, Oregon, which also has a large Old Believer community. Some also came from Xinjiang, China, by way of New Zealand. They had fled there after the Russian Revolution and the Chinese Communist Revolution.
