Plaza is a small, unincorporated community in Spokane County, Washington. This means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Plaza is nestled in a valley, about 7 miles (11 km) north of Rosalia. A big highway, U.S. Route 195, used to go right through Plaza. But in 1974, a new road was built around it, so now the highway passes a little bit to the west. Plaza is quite small, just a few blocks, and doesn't have many shops or services. However, its tall grain elevators are easy to spot for anyone driving by!
History of Plaza
How Plaza Started
Plaza was founded in 1879 by a man named Robert Patterson. He was a very interesting person because he used to be a Pony Express rider! The Pony Express was a famous mail service that used riders on horses to deliver mail very quickly across the country. Robert Patterson worked all over the Washington Territory before settling down.
A Community Grows
Robert Patterson decided to build a general store right next to the railway line. This railway connected important cities like Spokane and Colfax. Soon, a small community started to grow around his store. This community was made up of farmers and other skilled workers.
Life in Early Plaza
The main business in Plaza was farming, especially growing crops. But because the railway passed through, the community also offered goods and services to people traveling by train. Plaza became a helpful stop for both local farmers and railway passengers.
