History of Pleasanton
Early Beginnings and a Famous Battle
In 1864, a big battle called the Battle of Mine Creek happened near where Pleasanton is today. General Alfred Pleasonton led the Union army to victory against the Confederates. This important battle, which involved about 25,000 soldiers, stopped the Confederate army from invading Kansas.
Pleasanton officially started in 1869. This was when the Kansas City, Fort Scott & Memphis Railroad was built through the area. The city was named after General Alfred Pleasonton, even though the spelling is a little different.
The first post office in Pleasanton opened in August 1869. This made it easier for people to send and receive mail.
Churches and Natural Events
Pleasanton's first church, the Fairmount Church, was built in 1884. Sadly, on April 27, 2014, an EF2 tornado destroyed the church. The tornado also caused a lot of damage to the town's cemetery.

Pleasanton is located about 67 miles (108 kilometers) south of Kansas City.
