Pleistocene fossils in Michigan facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Michigan is a great place to find ancient animal bones! Many people, like farmers and construction workers, have found the remains of huge animals that lived a long, long time ago. These animals are called Pleistocene mammals, and they lived during the Ice Age. Most of the bones found in Michigan belong to mammoths and mastodons.

Finding these ancient animal bones, called fossils, is quite rare in Michigan. If someone finds a fossil, it's usually best to give it to a university or museum. Experts there can clean and study the bones carefully. Many mastodon fossils have been found in southern Michigan, especially near Ann Arbor. Mammoth fossils are more often found in northern Michigan.

Ice Age Mammals of Michigan

During the Ice Age, Michigan was home to many amazing giant animals. Here are some of the most interesting ones whose fossils have been found here:

Jefferson Mammoths: Mammuthus jeffersoni

The Jefferson Mammoth was a huge, furry animal that looked a lot like today's elephants. This type of mammoth has been found all over Michigan. Scientists believe these mammoths mostly ate grass because of how their teeth are shaped. Their teeth worked like a horse's, grinding food from side to side.

Some Jefferson Mammoth bones have marks on them. These marks might have been made by stone tools. This suggests that ancient people who lived in Michigan long ago may have hunted these giant animals for food.

American Mastodons: Mammut americanum

The American Mastodon is another incredible ancient animal found in southern Michigan. It's so special that it's even Michigan's official state fossil! Mastodons were also very large, like mammoths, but they probably ate mostly trees and branches. They likely lived in groups, much like modern elephants do today.

Just like with mammoths, some mastodon bones have also been found with marks from stone tools. This tells us that ancient people probably hunted mastodons too.

Giant Beaver: Castoroides ohioensis

Imagine a beaver as big as a small car! The Giant Beaver was the largest beaver that ever lived, growing up to 7 feet (about 2.1 meters) long. Only a few of these giant beaver fossils have been found in Michigan. Most of the parts found are pieces of their skull and lower jaw.

Scott's Moose: Cervalces scotti

Only one fossil from Scott's Moose has ever been found in Michigan. This special find was an antler discovered in Berrien County. Scott's Moose was a type of ancient moose with very large, wide antlers.

Woodland Musk Ox: Symbos cavifrons

The Woodland Musk Ox was an animal that looked a bit like a modern musk ox, but it was larger. Fossils of this animal have been found at seven different places in Michigan. Scientists think that many of these animals once roamed the wide plains of North America.
