History of Plumpton
After Europeans settled Australia in 1788, a special school was built for Indigenous Australians in the early 1820s. This school was in the Plumpton area. It was sometimes called 'Black's Town'.
The school for Aboriginal children moved to this place in 1823. However, it closed down by 1833. Even though it was open for a short time, 'Black's Town' gave its name to a road. Later, a railway station and the whole area around it became known as Blacktown.
A man named Walter Lamb (1825–1906) owned a property called Woodstock. He started a factory there that made canned fruit. He also created a track for greyhound racing. Because of this, the area was first known as Woodstock.
But when a post office opened in 1889, people got confused. There was another place called Woodstock that had a railway station. To avoid confusion, the area was renamed Plumpton. This new name came from a famous greyhound racing track in England called Plumpton Racecourse.
