Pokémon the Movie: The Rise of Darkrai is an animated adventure film from Japan. It came out in 2007. The movie is based on the popular Pokémon series.

It was made by OLM, Inc. and released by Toho. Kunihiko Yuyama directed the film. Hideki Sonoda wrote the story. This movie is the tenth film in the Pokémon series. The series was created by Satoshi Tajiri, Junichi Masuda, and Ken Sugimori.

In the story, two powerful Pokémon, Palkia and Dialga, meet. They are not supposed to ever cross paths. Their fight causes big problems in Alamos Town. The people in town think a Pokémon named Darkrai is causing the trouble. Darkrai is known for giving nightmares. But Darkrai is actually trying to protect the town from Palkia and Dialga.

The movie first came out in Japan on July 14, 2007. It has two sequels: Pokémon: Giratina & the Sky Warrior (2008) and Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life (2009). The movie's theme song, "Be With You (Itsumo Soba ni)," is sung by Sarah Brightman.

What Happens in the Movie?

A long time ago, a man named Godey built the Space-Time Towers in Alamos Town. These towers had huge musical instruments. Godey had a strange dream and wrote it down. His great-grandson, Tonio, later found this diary.

The dream said that two powerful beings would meet. Their anger would destroy the town. In Godey's garden, a Pokémon named Darkrai lived. Darkrai could cause nightmares. Everyone disliked Darkrai, but a kind girl named Alicia invited it to stay. Godey realized his dream meant he needed to create a special song. This song, called "Orácion," could calm even the strongest anger. Years later, Darkrai saved Alicia's granddaughter, Alice, from falling off a cliff.

The Battle Begins

In the present day, Godey's dream starts to come true. Palkia, a Pokémon that controls space, and Dialga, who rules over time, are fighting. Their battle happens in another dimension. This fight causes strange things to happen in Alamos Town.

Ash Ketchum, Brock, and Dawn arrive in town. Dawn is there for a Pokémon Contest. The fighting between Palkia and Dialga damages the garden. A man named Baron Alberto blames Darkrai for everything. Darkrai battles Alberto's Lickilicky. During the fight, Darkrai makes Ash fall asleep. Ash has a nightmare where Palkia attacks him. Darkrai then disappears into a hole, and Ash and his Pikachu are pulled in.

Darkrai's True Role

The next day, Palkia appears in Alamos Town. It is hurt and trying to hide from Dialga. Palkia moves the entire town to another dimension. There is no way to escape. Darkrai shows up in the town square. It seems to be telling someone to leave.

Alberto, Ash, Dawn, and other trainers start to fight Darkrai. Darkrai gets angry and traps many Pokémon in nightmares. Later that night, Tonio finds Palkia resting near the Towers. Darkrai tries to attack Palkia. Ash then understands that Darkrai was trying to warn them about Palkia. Darkrai's nightmare was a message.

Saving Alamos Town

As Palkia is about to attack Darkrai, Dialga arrives. Dialga attacks both Palkia and Darkrai. The two powerful Pokémon start fighting again. The entire town slowly begins to fall apart. Alice finds the "Oración" music disc. Ash and Dawn climb to the top of the Space-Time Towers. They need to play the song. Brock helps everyone in town get to safety.

Tonio explains that if Palkia and Dialga hit each other one more time, the whole dimension will be destroyed. Palkia and Dialga prepare their strongest attacks. Darkrai bravely flies between them. It forms a shield around itself to block the attacks. This also stops Palkia and Dialga.

After breaking free, Palkia and Dialga both attack Darkrai. Darkrai disappears. Ash and Dawn realize the Towers need power. Pikachu and Dawn's Pachirisu use their electricity to power the Towers. The "Oración" song begins to play. The music calms Palkia and Dialga. Dialga flies away, and Palkia's wound heals. Ash and Dawn ask Palkia to fix the town. Alamos Town returns to normal. Everyone is happy. Later, they are sad about Darkrai. Alice thanks Darkrai for its help. Then, they see Darkrai standing on top of the Space Tower!

In the end credits, Dawn does not win her Pokémon contest.

Where the Story Takes Place

The Rise of Darkrai is set in a place inspired by Barcelona, Spain. The movie's creators visited Barcelona in 2006. They wanted to make the movie's setting look like the real city.

The Space-Time Towers in the movie are based on the famous Sagrada Família church in Barcelona. The garden in the movie is like Park Güell. The architect Godey and his descendant Tonio are named after Antoni Gaudí. He was the real architect of the Sagrada Família.
