Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Ginji's Rescue Team (ポケモン不思議のダンジョンギンジの救助隊, Pokemon Fushigi no Danjon: Ginji no Kyūjotai) is a special comic series. It has six parts and is based on the popular video games, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team.
This manga first appeared in Japan in a magazine called CoroCoro Comic in late 2005. Later, it was translated into English language. You could read it in Nintendo Power magazine from September 2006 to February 2007. The English version kept the original right-to-left reading style. After the series finished, Viz Media released all the English comics together in one book.

Story of Ginji's Rescue Team
The comic follows the exciting adventures of a boy named Ginji. He is a bit impatient but has a good heart. One day, Ginji wakes up to find he has turned into a Torchic! He is now in a strange new world filled with Pokémon.
Soon after, he meets a shy Mudkip. Mudkip dreams of joining a rescue team to help other Pokémon. Ginji really wants to become human again. Mudkip tells him about a wise Xatu who can see the future. Ginji hopes Xatu can help him return home.
Meeting New Friends and Foes
As Ginji and Mudkip start their journey to find Xatu, another Pokémon joins them. This is Gengar, who says he just wants to return something to Xatu. But Gengar has a secret plan to steal from Xatu.
The group climbs a tall mountain. There, they meet the powerful Zapdos. Ginji tries to fight Zapdos, but he is not strong enough alone. The battle takes a turn when Mudkip bravely uses his move, Mud Sport. This makes Zapdos's attacks weaker. Then, Ginji finishes the fight with a close-range Flamethrower.
When they finally find Xatu, the wise Pokémon confirms Ginji is human. However, Xatu can only see a dark future ahead.
The Ninetales Prophecy
When the team returns to the village, Gengar spreads a false rumor. He tells the other Pokémon that Ginji is causing the many natural disasters happening. Gengar tells a story from long ago. In this story, a human touched the tail of Ninetales for fun. This act was supposed to bring a thousand-year curse. But before the human could be cursed, his friend, a Gardevoir, bravely took the curse instead.
Ninetales then asked the human if he would save Gardevoir. But the human chose to run away. Ninetales then made a prophecy. It said that in one thousand years, the human would be reborn as a Pokémon. This reborn human would then destroy the world.
To find out if he is truly that human, Ginji sets off again with Mudkip.
Facing Challenges and Discovering Truths
Their journey is soon interrupted by Moltres. Gengar had turned Moltres against Ginji. Moltres traps Mudkip on an island in a river of lava. He asks Ginji if he would abandon his friend, just like the human in the old story. Ginji uses Sand Attack to escape the trap. He does not abandon Mudkip. Instead, he uses his fire powers to send a jet of lava towards Moltres. While the lava is in the air, Mudkip uses Water Gun on it. This turns the lava into Moltres's weakness, the attack Rock Slide.
The team continues through the Frosty Forest. There, they meet Absol. Absol is often wrongly blamed for disasters. Because of this, Absol understands Ginji's difficult situation. They are attacked by Articuno. But Absol saves them by talking Articuno out of fighting.
The team finally reaches Ninetales' cave. There, they are attacked by another Pokémon team led by Alakazam. Ginji and Mudkip fight bravely. Alakazam notices how much braver and stronger Mudkip has become. The fight stops when Ninetales appears. Ninetales reveals the truth: Gengar, not Ginji, is the reborn human from the prophecy. Ginji was actually turned into a Pokémon to save the world, not destroy it. The natural disasters were a sign that Groudon was about to awaken.
The Final Battle
Meanwhile, Gengar uses a special rock called a Gravelerock. He uses it to break open the earth and awaken the mighty Groudon. Ginji, Mudkip, Alakazam's team, and Ninetales all set out to fight Groudon.
During the battle, Gengar saves Mudkip from falling rocks. He feels regret for abandoning Gardevoir in the past. This feeling makes Gengar join the fight. He mentally tells Ninetales that he "didn't run away this time." Gengar is not seen again after bravely using Double-Edge on Groudon. The group gets more help from Absol and other Pokémon from the village. Finally, Groudon is defeated, and the Pokémon celebrate their victory.
In the middle of the celebration, Ginji wakes up. He is human again, back in his own home. He wonders if it was all just a dream. But then, he finds his Pokémon rescue team badge. He realizes that Mudkip is now much braver and will always try his best. Ginji heads off to school, vowing to always try his best too.
Differences from the Games
This comic series is based on the Blue and Red Rescue Team video games. But there are some clear differences between the manga and the games.
- In the manga, Gengar is not part of a rescue team. The group called Team Meanies from the games does not exist here. Also, Pokémon like Medicham and Ekans are not in the manga. In the comic, Gengar wants to destroy the Pokémon world because he was turned into a Pokémon by the "Curse of Ninetales."
- Ginji does not stay a Pokémon after saving the world. In the video games, the main character (the player) remains a Pokémon.
- Ginji remembers being human. In the games, the main character does not remember their human life.
- In the games, the main character is simply woken up by their partner. In the manga, Ginji wakes up because of a small earthquake and Mudkip's cry for help.
- Ginji seems to be an experienced Pokémon right from the start. In the video games, the main character is not very experienced when they begin their life as a Pokémon.
- In the games, the strange natural disasters are caused by an asteroid falling towards the world. This asteroid is destroyed by Rayquaza. In the manga, the disasters happen because Groudon is waking up. Groudon is defeated by the characters in the manga.
- In the games, Gengar rescues Gardevoir and makes up for his past actions. In the manga, he is possibly gone after bravely fighting Groudon.
- Because the cause of the disasters is different, the final journey to Rayquaza from the games is not in the manga. The battle with Groudon becomes the main exciting part instead.
