History of Pollard

Pollard was once a very important town in Escambia County. From 1868 to 1883, it was the first "county seat." A county seat is the main town where the local government offices are located. Later, Brewton became the county seat instead.

The town is named after Charles T. Pollard. He was the person who started the Alabama and Florida Railroad. This railroad built tracks that connected Pollard to bigger cities like Montgomery and Pensacola.

Pollard During the Civil War

During the Civil War, a training camp called Camp Pollard was built just north of the town. This camp helped protect the important railroad lines. In December 1864, a group of Union soldiers attacked Pollard. Their goal was to destroy the railroad junction.

The Union soldiers found that the Confederate forces had left Pollard. They then destroyed the local railroad bridges. They also burned most of the town.
