Polyctenium williamsiae

Polyctenium is a group of flowering plants. These plants belong to the Brassicaceae family, which also includes cabbage and broccoli. You can find them growing naturally in the Great Basin area of the Western United States.

People often call these plants combleaf. This name comes from their leaves, which have deep cuts that make them look a bit like a comb.

What are Combleaf Plants?

Combleaf plants are a type of flowering plant. They are part of a larger plant family known as Brassicaceae. This family is very important and includes many common vegetables.

Where Do Combleaf Plants Grow?

These plants are native to a specific part of North America. They grow in the Great Basin region. This area covers parts of several western states in the United States.

Types of Combleaf Plants

There are two main types, or species, of plants in the Polyctenium group. Each one has its own special features and places where it grows.

Washoe Combleaf

The first type is called Polyctenium williamsiae, also known as the Washoe combleaf. This plant is quite rare. Because it is so rare, it has special protection in Nevada. You can find it growing in the Washoe Valley playas. These playas are flat, dry lakebeds located in the Virginia Range.

Desert Combleaf

The second type is Polyctenium fremontii, or the Desert combleaf. This species is more common than the Washoe combleaf. It grows in different habitats across the Great Basin. You can find it in northeastern California and southeastern Oregon. It also grows in southwestern Idaho and northwestern Nevada.
