Poppyseed oil is a special kind of oil that comes from poppy seeds. It is also known as poppy seed oil or poppy oil.
Poppy seeds contain a lot of oil, usually about 45% to 50%. This oil tastes good and is full of vitamin E. It also has other helpful things called tocopherols. Compared to other vegetable oils, poppyseed oil has a good amount of phytosterols. It has more than soybean oil and peanut oil, but less than safflower oil or sesame oil. Poppyseed oil usually has little to no smell and a nice taste. It also doesn't go bad as quickly as some other oils.

What is Poppyseed Oil Used For?
Poppyseed oil has a few different uses. Sometimes, people use it for cooking. It can also be used to help moisturize skin, making it soft.
Poppyseed Oil in Art
One of the main uses for poppyseed oil is in making paints, varnishes, and soaps. It is known as a drying oil. This means it dries and hardens when exposed to air.
In oil painting, artists often use oils to mix with their colors. The most common oil for this is linseed oil. However, Walnut oil and poppyseed oil are also popular with painters. Each oil is used for different reasons. Poppyseed oil is especially good for white paints. This is because it does not leave a yellow tint, which linseed oil can sometimes do.
Even though poppyseed oil keeps white paints looking bright, it dries much slower than linseed oil. Poppyseed oil takes about 5 to 7 days to dry, while linseed oil dries in 3 to 5 days. Because of this, artists usually don't use poppyseed oil for the first layers of a painting. Also, it's not a good idea to paint linseed oil over a layer of poppyseed oil.
Poppyseed Oil in Medicine
Poppyseed oil is also used to make a special substance called lipiodol. This is used in medicine as a radiocontrast agent. It helps doctors see inside the body using X-rays.
History of Poppyseed Oil
Long ago, in the early 1900s, most poppyseed oil came from France and Germany. They often imported poppy seeds from other countries to make the oil. Between 1900 and 1911, these two countries made a lot of poppyseed oil, around 60 million kilograms each year!
At that time, poppyseed oil was mostly used for salad dressings. Sometimes, it was mixed with other oils like sesame oil or hazelnut oil. This was done to make the oil taste better, especially if it came from seeds that had been stored for a long time and were starting to go bad. Poppyseed oil was also sometimes mixed into olive oil or peach kernel oil.
