The Porcupine River is a river in Ontario, Canada. It flows through the city of Timmins in the Cochrane District. This river is part of a larger water system that eventually leads to James Bay.

The Porcupine River is about 32 kilometres (20 mi) long. It starts at Porcupine Lake and ends at Night Hawk Lake. Night Hawk Lake is also the beginning of the Frederick House River, which is a branch of the Abitibi River.

Where the Porcupine River Flows

The Porcupine River starts at Porcupine Lake. The lake is about 277 metres (909 ft) above sea level. From the lake, the river flows towards the northeast.

It goes under Ontario Highway 101 near the community of Porcupine. The river then continues northeast. It meets another smaller river, the North Porcupine River, which joins it from the left side.

The Porcupine River then turns southeast. It goes under Highway 101 again near the area called Hoyle. Finally, it reaches Night Hawk Lake at its northwest side. Here, the elevation is about 274 metres (899 ft) above sea level.

How People Use the River

The Porcupine River and Porcupine Lake are used for transportation. The Timmins/Porcupine Lake Water Aerodrome is located on Porcupine Lake. This is a place where seaplanes can land and take off from the water.
