What is Porter?

Porter is an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own official city government or fixed borders like a city does. Instead, people often think of Porter as the area covered by its specific Zip code, 77365. This is because there's a post office named Porter in that area.

The New Caney Independent School District also uses this zip code to define the area for its schools. This helps them decide which students go to which schools in Porter and nearby New Caney.

How Did Porter Start?

The first people to settle in this part of Montgomery County arrived in the 1860s. They were cattle ranchers who settled near what is now New Caney, just north of Porter.

In the late 1870s and early 1880s, a new railroad was built through the area. This brought more settlers. One of these early residents was James Porter, who ran a sawmill. When a post office opened in 1892, the town was called "Porters." This name might have come from a request to name the town "Porter's Mill" that was turned down. In 1953, the post office dropped the "s," and the town became known as Porter.
