Poslingford is a small village located in the Suffolk area of eastern England. It is part of the West Suffolk district. A small stream flows through the village, eventually joining the River Stour. The village is built along a main road called The Street, which goes towards the village of Stansfield. Poslingford rises about 140 meters (460 feet) above sea level from its southern to northern parts.

The Village Church: St Mary's

The Church of St Mary is located near the center of Poslingford. It is part of a group of churches in the Stour Valley area. Church services are held there regularly, but they rotate among the different churches in the group.

The church is also an important meeting place for the village. The local Parish Council holds its meetings in the church foyer. This is because it is the only public space available in Poslingford for such gatherings.

Inside the church, you can find a stone coffin and a bell. These items were found at the site of Chipley Priory, which was an old religious building about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) north-west of the village. Both the priory and the church later became part of the property owned by Stoke College in Stoke-by-Clare.

Poslingford Hall Manor and the Golding Family

For many centuries, the Golding family was one of the most important families in Poslingford. They owned the manor, which was a large estate with land and buildings. As early as 1573, members of the Golding family, George and Henry, were asked to show how they came to own the church's Rectory. This suggests they probably already owned the manor at that time. By 1635, Thomas Golding held both the manor and the advowson, which was the right to choose the priest for the church.

The Golding family mostly lived in a house called New House. Even though it's called "New House," it's actually a very old building. In 1572, it was described as "a messuage newly built called the Newhowse." But even then, it wasn't completely new, as it was built on the site of an even older manor called Bustalmynes. This older manor was named after John Burstemyn, who lived there in 1327.

In the early 1700s, the Golding family improved their property. They built a garden canal and planted rows of trees within their small park. The Goldings were very involved with Poslingford church. They chose almost every new Vicar (priest) for the church from 1563 to 1804. Many members of this family are buried inside the church itself. There is a special monument to them on the West Wall in the main part of the church, called the nave.

One notable family member was Mary Golding (who died in 1699). She was the daughter of Thomas Golding of New House. Mary married Sir George Villiers, who was a famous Cavalier during the English Civil War. He was also the nephew of George Villiers, the 1st Duke of Buckingham, who was a close friend of King Charles I. Mary's tomb is located in the floor of the church's chancel, which is the area near the altar.

Poslingford Today

In the past, Poslingford was a village that could provide most things its residents needed. It had its own school, a post office, a small shop, a blacksmith (who worked with metal), and a public house called The Shepherd and Dog.

However, all these local services have now closed down. Today, most of the village's approximately 200 residents travel to nearby towns to get what they need.
