History of Prairie Village
Prairie Village was planned in 1941. It was named after the Prairie School, which had been built almost a century earlier. In 1949, the city was called the best-planned community in America. This award came from the National Association of Home Builders. Prairie Village officially became a city in 1951.
You can still find parts of the old Santa Fe Trail in the city. This trail was a famous route for trade and travel long ago.
Early Inhabitants and Settlers
Long ago, the land where Prairie Village now stands was home to Native American tribes. These included the Shawnee, Osage, and Kansa Indians.
In 1858, a man named Thomas Porter bought 160 acres of farmland here. He raised his children on this farm. He also helped develop farming and local community matters.
Thomas Porter's sister, Betty Porter, married Thompson A. Lewis. Thompson owned 80 acres of land nearby. This land was located between Mission Road and Roe Avenue.
Another early settler was Henry Coppock. He arrived in Johnson County in 1857. He later worked in freighting and farming further west. Coppock returned in the mid-1860s and bought land in 1865. He built his family home on 900 acres in Prairie Village. His house stood for 30 years. Today, the Homestead County Club is on some of his original land.
The Prairie School
The first Prairie School was built in 1882. A new school building was constructed in 1912. This school was an important part of the community. However, in 1990, lightning struck the building during a storm. The east entrance of the 1912 building still stands today. It is part of the remodeled school.
Modern Development
In the 1940s, a skilled developer named J. C. Nichols had a big idea. He wanted to turn the farmland into homes for soldiers returning from World War II. Nichols bought land from the Porter, Coppock, and Lewis families.
There were some challenges, like not enough experienced builders after the war. But Nichols kept working towards his goal. Prairie Village continued to grow. The Prairie Village Shopping Center opened in 1947. The Corinth Square Shopping Center opened in 1955. Many new neighborhoods were also built, like Corinth Hills and Prairie Hills.
