The President of Rwanda is like the main leader of the country. They are chosen by the people in an election every seven years. The President also picks the Prime Minister and other important government officials.
So far, four different people have been President of Rwanda. The current President is Paul Kagame. He became President on April 22, 2000.

How Long Can a President Serve?
In Rwanda, the President used to have a limit of two terms in office. This rule was part of the country's constitution.
However, in 2015, the people of Rwanda voted to change this rule. This change allowed President Paul Kagame to run for a third seven-year term. It also made it possible for him to run for two more five-year terms after that.
Who Has Been President of Rwanda?
Here is a list of the people who have served as President of Rwanda:
- Dominique Mbonyumutwa (1961): He was an acting president for a short time.
- Grégoire Kayibanda (1961–1973): He was the first official President of Rwanda. He was elected in 1961 and again in 1965 and 1969.
- Juvénal Habyarimana (1973–1994): He became president in 1973. He was elected three times during his time in office.
- Théodore Sindikubwabo (1994): He was an acting president for a few months.
- Pasteur Bizimungu (1994–2000): He became president in 1994. He resigned from his position in 2000.
- Paul Kagame (2000–present): He first served as acting president. Then he became the official President on April 22, 2000. He has been re-elected several times since then.
