What is the President of the Senate?
The President of the Senate is the person who leads the meetings and activities of the Mexican Senate. The Senate is like one of the two main groups that make laws in Mexico.
How the President is Chosen
At the start of each year's law-making period, the Mexican Senate chooses a special group called the Executive Board (Mesa Directiva). This board has a President, three Vice-Presidents, and four Secretaries. All 128 senators vote for these positions. They need more than half of the votes to be chosen. The President of this Executive Board also becomes the President of the Senate. They can be chosen again for the next year if the senators agree.
Senate President vs. Congress President
The President of the Senate leads the upper house of the Mexican Congress. The Mexican Congress has two parts: the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies. While the Senate President leads the Senate, the leader of the Chamber of Deputies is actually the President of the entire Congress.
