Price Island is located on the southeastern side of Hecate Strait. Southeast of Price Island is Milbanke Sound, and Laredo Sound is to the northwest.

Price Island is a beautiful island located off the coast of British Columbia, a Canadian province. It sits at the southeastern end of a large body of water called Hecate Strait. It is also at the northeastern end of Queen Charlotte Sound.

The very southern tip of Price Island is known as Day Point. This point helps mark the border between Hecate Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound. Just south of Price Island, you'll find Milbanke Sound. Laredo Sound is located just north of the island. Another island, Swindle Island, is also close by, just north of Price Island.

The main shipping route known as the Inside Passage goes through Milbanke Sound. It then enters Finlayson Channel, which is just east of Price Island. Price Island is part of the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine, a local government area in British Columbia.

Size and Shape of Price Island

Price Island is about 23 kilometres (14 mi) long. It is also around 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) wide. The total area of the island is about 122 square kilometres (47 sq mi). This makes it a fairly large island off the coast of British Columbia.

How Price Island Got Its Name

Price Island was officially named in 1866. It was named by Captain Daniel Pender of the Royal Navy. He chose to name the island after another Royal Navy officer, Captain John Adolphus Pope Price.

Volcanic Past of Price Island

Price Island is part of a special area called the Milbanke Sound Group. This area is known for its volcanic activity. It includes several small, single-eruption volcanoes called cinder cones. These are often shaped like cones.

Long ago, during a time called the Holocene epoch, lava flowed from Price Island. This lava was a type of rock called basalt. These ancient lava flows now cover the beach areas next to the island. This shows that the island has a history of volcanic eruptions.
