Early Life and Family
Prince Benedetto was born at the Palace of Venaria in Italy. He was the youngest child of King Charles Emmanuel III of Sardinia and his third wife, Élisabeth Thérèse of Lorraine. Sadly, his mother passed away shortly after he was born. He was named after Pope Benedict XIV, who had become the Pope the year before Benedetto's birth.
At the time he was born, Benedetto was third in line to become king of Sardinia. His older half-brother, Victor Amadeus, was first, and his full brother, Prince Carlo, was second. Prince Carlo died when he was very young. Benedetto had many famous relatives, including his cousins Louis XV of France and the future Ferdinand VI of Spain. His maternal cousins included Maria Carolina, who became the Queen of Naples, and the well-known Marie Antoinette.
Benedetto's uncle, Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor, once suggested that Benedetto marry his daughter, Archduchess Maria Christina of Austria. The Emperor hoped this marriage would strengthen the ties between the House of Lorraine (his family) and the House of Savoy (Benedetto's family). However, this marriage never happened.
Royal Homes and Titles
In 1753, Benedetto's father gave him the Palazzo Chiablese in Turin as his own home. This palace was made even more beautiful under Benedetto's care. He hired a famous architect named Benedetto Alfieri to work on it.
In 1763, his father officially gave him the title of Duke of Chablais. Benedetto had been called the Duke of Chablais since he was born, but now it was official. He also received control over several other lands, including Cureggio, Trino, and Crescentino. Later, in 1796, his brother, who had become King Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia, also made him the Marquis of Ivrea.
In 1764, Benedetto bought another important property, the fiefdom of Agliè, from his brother. This included the Ducal Palace of Agliè. Benedetto also made improvements to this palace, with the help of architect Ignatius Birago Borgaro.
Marriage and Military Role
Prince Benedetto married Maria Anna of Savoy on 19 March 1775, at the Royal Palace of Turin. Maria Anna was his niece, the sixth child of his oldest brother, King Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia. They did not have any children together. Maria Anna passed away in 1824.
Benedetto was known as a skilled soldier. He was given command of the Army of Italy. This army included French troops and aimed to bring back the monarchy in France after King Louis XVI was executed in 1793. Benedetto also took part in the Battle of Loano.
He passed away in Rome at the age of 66. He was first buried at the church of San Nicolo dei Cesarini, but his remains were later moved to the Royal Basilica of Superga in Turin. When he died, his title of Duke of Chablais went back to the crown.
