Prince Charles Maurice (born May 14, 1727 – died January 18, 1798) was a prince from Monaco. He belonged to the famous House of Grimaldi, a family that has ruled Monaco for a long time. People often called him the Count of Valentinois. He was also a brave soldier who had an important military career.
Life of Prince Charles Maurice
Early Life
Charles Maurice was born in Paris, France, at a place called the Hôtel Matignon. He was the eighth child of his parents. His mother was Princess Louise Hippolyte of Monaco, who was the ruler at the time. His father was Prince Jacques I.
Even though his father was the Duke of Valentinois, Charles Maurice was given the title of Count of Valentinois. This meant he held a special rank. His older brother, Honoré III, later became the next Prince of Monaco after their father passed away in 1751.
Marriage and Family
Prince Charles Maurice got married on November 10, 1749. His wife was Marie Christine de Rouvroy. They were married in Paris with special permission from Louis XV of France, who was the King of France at that time.
However, their marriage did not last. Charles Maurice and Marie Christine separated in 1766. They did not have any children together.
Military Adventures
Prince Charles Maurice had an exciting military career. When he was just 18 years old, he took part in a very important battle. This was the Battle of Fontenoy.
Because of his bravery and skill in battle, he received a special award. He was given the Order of the Golden Fleece. This was a very high honor for a soldier.
