Jacques I was a Prince of Monaco. He was born Jacques François Léonor Goÿon on November 21, 1689. He became the Prince of Monaco by marrying Princess Louise Hippolyte of Monaco. He also built a famous building in Paris called the Hôtel Matignon.
Life of Jacques I
Jacques was born in a region of France called Normandy. His father held the title of Count of Matignon. Jacques later inherited this important title.
In 1715, Jacques married Princess Louise Hippolyte Grimaldi. She was the ruler of Monaco. This marriage made Jacques the Prince of Monaco. He reigned as Prince from 1731 to 1733.
Children of Jacques I
Jacques and Louise Hippolyte had several children together. Their children were:
- Antoine Charles Marie Grimaldi (1717–1718)
- Charlotte Thérèse Nathalie Grimaldi (1719–1790), who became a nun.
- Honoré Grimaldi (1720–1795), who later became the Prince of Monaco after his parents.
- Charles Marie Auguste Grimaldi (1722–1749)
- Jacques Grimaldi (1723–1723), who died very young.
- Louise Françoise Grimaldi (1724–1729)
- François Charles Grimaldi (1726–1743)
- Charles Maurice Grimaldi (1727–1798)
- Marie Françoise Thérése Grimaldi (1728–1743), who passed away from smallpox.
Name and Titles
Jacques was christened with the names Jacques François Léonor. His family name was Goÿon. He was known by his title, "Comte de Matignon," which means Count of Matignon.
