Exploring Pringle's History and Location
Pringle began as a stop for stagecoaches on the Sidney-Custer Trail. This stop was run by Henry Pringle and was called the Point of Rocks Stage Station. It got its name from a large, unique granite rock formation nearby.
The Sidney-Custer Trail was a very important path into the southern part of the Black Hills from Nebraska. The Point of Rocks Station also served travelers going between Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Custer.
A small community, also known as Point of Rocks, soon grew around the stage station. In 1890, the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad built tracks to the settlement. At this time, the town's name was changed to Pringle. It was named after Anna Carr Pringle, who was very kind to the railroad workers when they came through town. Soon, the settlement had a train station and two stores.
Pringle is also known for a housing area linked to the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This community continues to grow in the area.
According to the United States Census Bureau, Pringle covers a total area of about 0.24 square miles (0.63 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
