What Does the Pristimantis curtipes Look Like?
The Pristimantis curtipes is known for its short legs. These frogs can vary a lot in size and color when they are adults.
Size and Appearance
Male frogs usually measure between 16 and 33 millimeters from their snout to their bottom. Female frogs are a bit larger, measuring from 26 to 43 millimeters. The frog's head is narrower than its body, but it is wider than it is long.
Special Features
The frog's eardrum is hidden. Its back, called the dorsum, has small, flat bumps and two unclear folds along its sides. The color of these frogs can be very different from one frog to another. However, their main color is usually dark gray or brown. Most Pristimantis curtipes have darker, unclear patterns on their backs. Some even have stripes!
Where Does the Pristimantis curtipes Live?
The Pristimantis curtipes is a common frog that lives in many different places. It can be found at very high altitudes, from 2,750 to 4,400 meters above sea level. It might even live higher than that!
Preferred Homes
These frogs mostly live in special mountain grasslands called páramo habitats. At lower parts of their altitude range, they can also be found in montane forests, which are mountain forests. When these frogs are not active, they like to hide under rocks in very damp areas.
Neighboring Frogs
The area where Pristimantis curtipes lives overlaps with another frog species, Pristimantis unistrigatus. However, in similar habitats at lower altitudes, Pristimantis unistrigatus takes the place of Pristimantis curtipes.
Is the Pristimantis curtipes Safe?
The Pristimantis curtipes is a very adaptable species, meaning it can adjust well to different environments. Because of this, it is not currently facing any major threats.
Potential Dangers
Even though it's doing well, one possible danger for this frog is habitat loss. This happens when the places where they live are destroyed or changed by human activities.
Protected Areas
Luckily, the Pristimantis curtipes lives in several national parks and nature reserves in Ecuador. These protected areas help keep the frogs and their homes safe. Some of these parks include the Cotopaxi National Park and the Llanganates National Park.
