Protivin is a small city located in the state of Iowa, in the United States. It is unique because it spans across two different areas: Chickasaw and Howard counties. In 2020, the city had a population of 269 people.
The first people who settled here named the city after a town called Protivín in Bohemia. This area is now part of the southern Czech Republic. The current mayor of Protivin is Michael Lensing.

Discovering Protivin's Past
The first settlers from the Czech Republic arrived in Protivin around 1855. They chose this area because the land reminded them of their homeland. Most of these early settlers were Catholic.
They built the town's very first building, a church, in 1878. Protivin was officially planned out in 1878. It became an incorporated town in 1894. This means it officially became a self-governing community.
Life in Protivin
Protivin celebrates its unique Czech heritage every August. They hold an annual weekend festival called Czech Days. This event brings people from all over Howard and Chickasaw counties together.
The Roman Catholic Holy Trinity Church is the only church in Protivin. It is also home to the town's only school. This school is a private school known as Trinity Catholic School.

Education in Protivin
Protivin is part of the Turkey Valley Community School District. The main school for this district is located in Jackson Junction.
Trinity Catholic School is also in Protivin. This is a private school connected to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Dubuque.
