Provinces of Iraq facts for kids
Iraq is a country in the Middle East. To help manage its different areas, Iraq is divided into 18 main parts. These parts are called provinces, or muhafazah in Arabic. Think of them like states or large regions within a country.
The Iraqi Constitution also recognizes one special area. This area is called the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. It is an autonomous federal region, meaning it has some self-governing powers. This region is made up of three specific provinces: Dahuk, Arbil, and As-Sulaymaniyyah.

The Kurdistan Region
The Iraqi Kurdistan Region is a unique part of Iraq. It has its own parliament and government. This region is located in the northern part of Iraq. It includes the provinces of Dahuk, Arbil, and As-Sulaymaniyyah. The capital city of the Kurdistan Region is Arbil.
The people in this region are mostly Kurds. They have their own culture and language. The region has a special status within Iraq. This allows it to manage many of its own affairs.
