The Perret's grassland frog (scientific name: Ptychadena perreti) is a type of frog that belongs to the Ptychadenidae family. You can find this frog in several countries in Africa. These include Cameroon, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo. It also lives in parts of the Central African Republic and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Scientists think it might also be in Angola (in the Cabinda area) and Equatorial Guinea.

What's in a Name?

The second part of the frog's scientific name, perreti, is a special tribute. It honors a Swiss scientist named Jean-Luc Perret. He was a herpetologist, which means he studied reptiles and amphibians. Jean-Luc Perret was especially interested in the frogs and other amphibians found in Africa.

How to Spot a Perret's Grassland Frog

These frogs have some interesting features that help you identify them.

Size and Shape

Adult male frogs are usually about 35 to 49 millimeters (1.4 to 1.9 inches) long. Adult females are a bit larger, measuring 46 to 57 millimeters (1.8 to 2.2 inches) long. Females tend to have a more solid body, while males are usually more slender. Both males and females have long, thin legs. Their snout, which is their nose area, is long and pointed. Their toes have a lot of webbing between them, which helps them swim.

Colors and Patterns

The back of the frog, called the dorsum, is often clay brown. It has rectangular black spots scattered across it. A golden brown stripe runs down the middle of its back. The throat, chest, and knees of these frogs often have dark spots. Their legs have complete dark stripes that go all the way across. The back of their thighs often have irregular stripes that are yellowish-green. The underside of the frog is whitish. It can also have a bright lemon-yellow or yellowish-green color.

Where They Live and How They're Doing

The Perret's grassland frog likes to live in places that have been changed by people.

Habitat

You can find these frogs in areas like farms, forests that have been cut down, and marshy (swampy) places. They also live in areas used for farming. When it's time to lay eggs, they choose puddles, ditches, and ruts in the ground.

Conservation Status

This frog is quite common and can handle some changes to its home. However, it can still be affected by habitat loss. This happens when land is used for farming, logging, or building new homes. Luckily, the Perret's grassland frog lives in many protected areas. This helps to keep their populations safe.
