Puako (which is pronounced Puakō in Hawaiian) is a small community in Hawaiʻi County, Hawaii, United States. It's known as a census-designated place (CDP), which means it's a special area defined by the government for gathering population information. In 2020, about 267 people lived there. Back in 2006, a big earthquake happened about 10 kilometers (6 miles) offshore from Puako.

Exploring Puako's Location and Size
Puako is located on the west side of Hawaii Island. You can find it at these coordinates: 19°58′3″N 155°50′48″W. The community sits right next to the Pacific Ocean on its western side. To the east, it borders Waikoloa Village.
Roads and Nearby Towns
Hawaii Route 19 runs along the eastern edge of Puako. This road can take you about 14 miles (23 km) northeast to Waimea. If you head southwest on Route 19 for about 28 miles (45 km), you'll reach Kailua-Kona.
Land and Water Area
The United States Census Bureau says that Puako covers a total area of about 45.7 square kilometers (17.6 square miles). A large part of this area is land, about 26.7 square kilometers (10.3 square miles). The rest, about 19.0 square kilometers (7.3 square miles), is water. This means that over 41% of Puako's total area is covered by water!

Puako is a small community. In 2000, there were 429 people living there. By 2010, the population grew to 772 people. However, the most recent count in 2020 showed the population at 267 people.

In 2000, the people living in Puako came from different backgrounds. Most residents, about 71.56%, were White. About 11.42% were Asian, and 4.43% were Pacific Islander. The remaining 12.59% were from two or more racial groups. About 3.26% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
