The Puerto Rican woodpecker (Melanerpes portoricensis) is a very unique bird. It is the only woodpecker that lives only in Puerto Rico. This means it is endemic to the island. It is also the only woodpecker species that lives in Puerto Rico all the time. You can find this bird easily on the main island of Puerto Rico. However, it is quite rare on the island of Vieques.

What Does the Puerto Rican Woodpecker Look Like?

The Puerto Rican woodpecker has a striking look. Its body is mostly black. It has a bright red throat and chest. A white patch runs across its head, from one eye to the other. Its sides and lower belly have a light orange color.

Like many birds, males and females look a bit different. This is called sexual dimorphism. The males have brighter red throats and chests. Females usually have duller colors overall. Males also have slightly longer bills than females. They are also a little bigger. An average woodpecker weighs about 56 grams. Its body length is usually between 23 and 27 centimeters.

Where Does This Woodpecker Live?

The Puerto Rican woodpecker is a common bird in Puerto Rico. You can find it in many different places. It lives in forests, coffee farms, and mangrove swamps. It also likes palm tree groves, parks, and even gardens.

This woodpecker once lived on the island of St. Croix too. This is because Puerto Rico, Vieques, Culebra, St. Croix, and the other Virgin Islands were once connected. This happened during a time called the Pleistocene epoch. Scientists believe the woodpecker spread to St. Croix and Vieques back then.

How Does the Puerto Rican Woodpecker Behave?

The Puerto Rican woodpecker acts a lot like the North American red-headed woodpecker. Like most woodpeckers, it uses its strong beak to drill holes in tree trunks. It does this to find food. Its main diet includes insects. It loves to eat ants and beetle larvae.

Fruits are also an important part of its diet. About a quarter of what it eats is fruit. Sometimes, it might even eat scorpions, geckos, or coquís (small frogs).

Reproduction and Nesting

Female Puerto Rican woodpeckers lay their eggs in holes. These holes are carved out by the males. A female can lay anywhere from 1 to 6 white eggs.

The nests of the Puerto Rican woodpecker are quite popular! Other birds in Puerto Rico often use them. For example, the Puerto Rican flycatcher and the yellow-shouldered blackbird use these old nests.
