The Pulwama district is an important administrative area in Jammu and Kashmir, which is part of India. It is located south of Srinagar and its main city, Pulwama, serves as the district headquarters. This district is found in the central part of the beautiful Kashmir Valley.

Administration
Pulwama district was created in 1979. Before that, it was part of the Anantnag district. When it was first formed, Pulwama district had 550 villages. These villages were organized into five smaller administrative areas called subdistricts or tehsils.
Later, in 2007, a new district called Shopian district was created. Some parts of Pulwama district became part of Shopian. After this change, Pulwama district had 331 villages and four subdistricts. Today, the district covers an area of about 1,090 square kilometers.
Currently, Pulwama district has eight subdistricts, also known as tehsils. There are 327 villages in the district, though eight of them are not currently inhabited.
Tehsils
The eight tehsils in Pulwama district are:
- Awantipora Tehsil
- Pampore Tehsil
- Pulwama Tehsil
- Tral Tehsil
- Rajpora Tehsil
- Aripal Tehsil
- Shahoora (Litter) Tehsil
- Kakapora Tehsil
The district is also divided into five development blocks. These blocks help manage local development projects. Each block is made up of several smaller local self-governing units called panchayats. The development blocks are Tral, Keller, Pampore, Pulwama, and Kakapora.
Demographics
According to the 2011 census, Pulwama district had a population of 560,440 people. This number is similar to the population of countries like the Solomon Islands. Out of all the districts in India, Pulwama ranked 537th in terms of population size.
The district has about 598 people living per square kilometer. The population grew by about 29.18% between 2001 and 2011. For every 1,000 males, there were 912 females, which is lower than the national average in India. The literacy rate, meaning the percentage of people who can read and write, was 64.3%.

Most people in Pulwama district speak Kashmiri as their first language. In 2011, about 91.30% of the population spoke Kashmiri. Other languages spoken include Gojri (3.96%), Punjabi (1.38%), and Hindi (1.25%).
Healthcare
Pulwama district has a very good healthcare system. It has one main District Hospital in Pulwama, three Sub-District Hospitals, and many other health centers. A large new hospital is also being built in Awantipora Tehsil. When finished, it will be the biggest hospital in the Kashmir region.
Pencil District
Pulwama district is famous for making slates, which are used in pencils. About 70% of all the slates produced in India come from this district! These slates are then sent to different companies that make pencils. Because of this, Pulwama is known as a major center for the pencil industry. The village of Oukhoo in Pulwama district has even been called the 'Pencil Village' by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Transport
Pulwama district has good connections for travel.
Two important national highways, National Highway 44 and National Highway 444, go through the district.
There are also four railway stations and one halt station in the district. The main railway office for the district is at Awantipora Railway Station.

Kashmir's First Synthetic Hockey Turf
Pulwama district has achieved something special by building the first synthetic hockey turf in the entire Kashmir valley. This modern stadium was built because there was a big need for better hockey facilities in the region. The stadium is located at Government Boys Higher Secondary School Pulwama. It cost about 5 crore rupees (around 50 million Indian rupees) to build. This project is part of a plan by the government of Jammu and Kashmir to improve sports facilities and give athletes more chances to succeed.
Anand of Kashmir
Pulwama district is a top producer of milk in Jammu and Kashmir. This has earned it the nickname "Anand of Kashmir," after a famous milk-producing region in India. In 2020, Pulwama produced 31 crore liters of milk, which was sent all over Jammu and Kashmir. In 2017-18, it produced 28.04 crore liters. Every day, Pulwama currently produces about 8.5 lakh liters of milk.
